Photographer Gary Devore Provides Photography Pointers for SUN n FUN 26
Each year at SUN n FUN, attendees often attempt to capture the ‘perfect’ photo at Lakeland. The challenging feat can come with a couple of ground rules, Gary Devore is one photographer that has nailed down the technique.

Devore is the lead photographer for Cadet Wing Media at the United States Air Force Academy and has worked with Aero News for about 5 years now. With 15 years of professional experience, including his time in the Air Force, Devore has captured some impressive shots. Unlike the usual patron at AirVenture, Devore uses a professional grade Nikon Z9 camera to capture his shots. The high-tech attributions allow for easier positioning and shutter speed control. Regardless, you don’t need a fancy camera to get good photos, the most important aspect is knowing your equipment, said Devore.

The environment of a shot can also make or break it. Clear skies should be avoided and overcast skies should be focused on. Positioning is key and movements should always be intentional. Additionally, tracking is the most important aspect of following moving aircraft. Practice panning and shooting at low shutter speeds to get that desirable prop blur, using a high shutter speed can produce under-exposed photographs, according to Devore.
After a long day of snapping photos, finding the right photo is the last crucial step. Devore suggests finding something you wouldn’t typically see; a crowd in the foreground or dynamic buildings in a shot can elevate a simple fighter jet photo.

Ultimately, practice makes perfect. Devore urges to do research, both online and in person. Viewing previous SUN n FUN photographs to see which shots you prefer and tracking the movement of birds or planes at your local airport can make the difference. “Practice, practice, practice,” said Devore.
